He Sings!! He Dances!!!!

Oh, and there were some awards too. LOL

Yeah, the Oscars were mostly what I thought they would be. Not a lot of surprises. I'm really glad that Heath won for Best Supporting. Bebo and I watched the Batman movie in utter amazement at his performance - we really saw no trace of Heath Ledger, just The Joker - and that's how a performance should be. In the first Batman movie it wasn't that way. While Jack Nicholson gave a great performance, you could still see Jack Nicholson - in his voice, his mannerisms, etc. A little over the top Jack Nicholson, but still .... But Heath's performance - there wasn't, I don't know, you couldn't see Heath. I know I'm probably not explaining this well, so you'll have to take my word when I say that I sincerely believe that he deserved this award for the performance that he gave and for no other reason.

I had forgotten that Sean Penn had won the SAG awards or I wouldn't have been surprised at this win - I thought it would be Mickey Rourke - that he was the shoe-in. Kate Winslet was no surprise for the best actress - that left the best supporting award for the "unknown", since Kate won it at both the Golden Globes and the SAG awards. I've always liked her - liked that she was a "real" woman, not anorexic looking, but what a woman really looks like - at least a healthy woman. Not that there isn't a lot of healthy anorexic looking woman in real life - it's just nice to see someone on screen who has meat on her bones and plays the leading lady.

Anyway, I thought that Hugh did a great job - he sang, he danced - he pretty much did what he did at the Tony's - he entertained.

Because ....

Okay, now that was weird. I went to open Word to write this post and … it wasn’t there? Yeah, that’s what I said. I could click browse, go to a saved document and open it that way, but the link to Word is gone. Why? This sucks.

Anyway, I had today’s post narrowed down to three topics, but I’m not sure any of them will work. In fact, right now I can’t remember exactly what the other two were, so I guess I’m going with the third one.

The Screen Actor Guild Awards were on tonight. I’ll wait while you say “Oh no! I missed them!!” Yeah, that’s what I thought. For me, regardless of whether I’ve seen any movies this year or not – I never miss these award shows. But sometimes I wonder why? Like tonight, when only one show that I’ve watched won an award – out of everything nominated, only one. I’m sitting there all comfy against my pillows and wondering why I’m watching this except for the fact that I like celebrity stuff – a chance to see a favorite actor or actress. And I found myself rooting for certain people to win based only on two things – either I really liked the people, or I disliked the other nominees more. This got me to thinking about two things. One – Heath Ledger. I have the Batman movie waiting to be watched, but I haven’t seen it yet. So I really don’t know what kind of performance he gave. I do know that I liked his work, have a fondness for A Knight’s Tale, and am sad that he’s no longer with us. I really would like for him to win the Oscar. But is that fair? Is it really the best supporting actor performance of the year? Probably not, but then again isn’t it all really a popularity contest? Er, maybe not … since blockbuster movies are often overlooked in these awards. But I still wanted him to win. I want him to win the Oscar too. Why? Because even though his films will live on in whatever form movies are seen in the future, there will never be another new Heath Ledger movie, and having his name on the list of Oscar Award winners would be a nice way to mark his place in movie history – a sort of Life-Time Achievement award.

The second thing I was thinking about was how I was rooting for people even though I had never seen the performance. This reminded me about how there are certain authors whose books I buy without even reading the back or knowing anything about it – I just buy it because they wrote it. I know that we all do this – we all have our auto-buys. There are times when I have gone to on-line voting sites, scanned the list of book nominees and voted for someone I like even if I’ve never read the book – simply because I haven’t read any of the books listed.

But sometimes that’s really all of these award shows, book lists, etc actually boil down to – a popularity contest of sorts.

I don’t think that there’s any real point to this post, just a bit of wondering rambles.

In Memoriam

So I was going to blog about the Oscars, but realized that I didn't know a lot about any of the movies nominated this year. I'm still going to watch it, because I'm an Oscar freak. George Clooney is nominated, but I've heard that the probable winner will be Daniel Day Lewis, darnit. One of my favorite parts of the show is the memoriam to those actors/actresses who have died in the past Oscar year (March 2007 thru February 2008). Don't ask me why - I've always been a celebrity obituary gal. Morbid, I know. My family calls me the obit lady. I've been called worse. Anway, here is my own personal in memoriam - because of space limitations I could only include the most famous ones. I'll be watching closely tonight to see who they leave out. I'm like that. I once wrote the Academy an email in protest because they left someone off of the list. Oscar Geek alert! So, will you/did you watch the Oscars?

Stunned. That's the only way I can describe my reaction to the news of Heath Ledger's death at the age of 28. What a loss of a remarkable talent. It was in 1997 that Bebo and I first saw Heath in a short-lived TV series called Roar. For those of you unfamiliar with this show (and you really should have watched it) here is a montage from the series.



They say he was found surrounded by sleeping pills. I hope it was an accident, that he didn't mean to overdose. He had just finished filming his role of the Joker in the new Batman movie. I feel sorry for his little girl.


In other news, I have an apartment. A cute little 1 bedroom with a fireplace! I've always wanted a fireplace. I move the weekend of March 15th.
