I've Got it Covered

Have you ever bought a book just because you liked the cover? I definitely have. Yeah, that one over there. I bought this in January 2005 - I haven't read it yet, just sat it on my desk for inspiration. Okay, I lied, I did read the love scenes. What do you think of those abs? I'm a little curious about the face, but I can fantasize that in. It wasn't just the body - although that's a big part of it - it's the whole attitude.

But it's not just the look that has pulled me in - I've been caught in the title trick too. What about you? Have you ever bought a book just because you liked the title?

I don't have the cover here, but I would love to read the book I Miss My Man, but My Aim is Getting Better. I keep meaning to look that one up and see who wrote it, but always forget.
Sharyn McCrumb has some great titles too. I've read
PMS Outlaws and the book on the right.
In fact, If I'd Killed Him When I Met Him ...
was the first of her mysteries I'd read. And I bought it solely on the title.

I've been looking for this one too. I just love the title.

Titles and covers have been the impetus of many a purchase, some good, other's not. In fact, I've found more bombs just by buying a book on title or cover impulse.

Is it just me or are the Blaze covers getting hotter?

That's all for today - it's Thursday, what did you expect ... Shakespeare? If you want funny, then go see Jill, Donna, or Daisy. But make sure you come back for Spamarama Friday AND the winner of the copy of Aussie Rules. You have until 9:00 p.m. (central) Thursday night to get your entries in. Look at Tuesday's post for details.

Omigosh, I've got to start haunting the category racks again!!

Yes! Isn't that cover for The Player just yummy? I have it on my bedstand and, while the book is good, I could almost just lay there and stare at the cover. (Deep breaths, fanning myself) I've already told Rhonda how great the cover is. I'm sorry Jill, but this kind of beats Room Service.

Bailey Stewart said...

Oh, and the book is good too. I haven't finished it yet.

That's the perfect example of why I love being surrounded by my books. I wish I had more room.

Her name was Lola
She was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair
And a dress cut down to there
She would Merengue
And do the Cha-Cha
And, while she tried to be a star
Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor
They worked from eight to four
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?

Toni Anderson said...

I never touched the bar!!

Great cover. Hmmm. You could get that made into a poster you know :)

Anyway, lost my thought track...if I ever had one :)

Wow, the blaze covers sure are getting pretty :0D Beats the one for ONCE UPON A SEDUCTION (red sequined bra and a high heel) that I just finished reading.

Had to lol on some of those titles, thought for sure they were fakes. Did you ever see that website where the guy makes fun of real romance covers? Puts fake names and authors on them? Really funny.

I bought Loving Mercy for the same reason. *ggg* I was shocked to find out that it was a historical. I also just received the Blaze at the bottom. Should be good. :)

Oh and I forgot to mention Mine to Keep by Dara Joy. I liked that cover so much I purchased multiple copies of the book. (wg)

I have read most of Sharyn McCrumb's books. Bimbo's of the Death Sun was good. Funny, but good. Set at a Sci-Fi convention like the one held in Atlanta every year. I bought a book for the cover recently. Body Heat by Katherine Garbera. Whew, the firefighter on the cover is 'hot', and I don't mean because of all the turn-out gear. I also read the book 'I miss my man, but My Aim is Getting Better'. try not to get heatstroke at work this thursday!

Loving Mercy is historical? Oh, well, who cares? Great cover. :o)

Wow, what a 6-pack. I think I might have picked that one up for inspiration too ... Thanks for brightening my day.

Michele said...

Heh, they don't title them BLAZE for nothing. LOL

Love the six pack but I'm curious . I'm reading a book right now that stated that he had a ripped eight pack....um..what does an EIGHT PAC AB look like?
Wouldn't that be a bit too much?

Titles that grab you:

Never Send A Dog To Do A Women's Job by Shelly Munro.
Loved the title! Now I adore her Talking Dog series and she's got the third in the series coming out now ... I'm so excited!

Whew--that got my day started right!

I'm a big sucker for covers. The more haunting the better. But I'll also get sucked in by a title too. And...dammit, I just looked at the other posts and now I can't think because Lola is dancing through my head!! AHHHH!!!

What a way to start the day off! I love those covers. (Fanning myself) The Blaze covers have be the hottest.

Mercy ...that is a good cover... gotta have great covers to catch the eye - but my kids look at me oddly every now and again w/ some books!

Bailey Stewart said...

Jeanne - Shame on you. LOL I refuse to have that song in my head for another day. Besides, I'm quite enjoying The Trolley Song from Meet Me in St. Louis at the moment. Even Manilow can't drown out Garland and "Clang, clang, clang".

Toni - yeah, right. ;-) Ooooh, I like the poster idea.

Lis - no, I've never seen that site. Sounds funny.

Jordan - I'm shocked. *gg* I was just walking by the books minding my business when - WHAM, that cover hit me. Yummy. And I've seen the Joy cover many times.

Brandy - the Body Heat cover is a good one also. Did you like the Miss my Man book?

Shirley - yep, Western.

Diane - any time.

Michele - I've never heard of an 8-pack. Anyone? I've never read the Dog series either. Might give it a look for. (as if I need another book - LOL)

Marty - What a kick-start, huh?

Peggy - I bought the same book, with the same reaction.

Kelly - blame it all on Jill Shalvis and the dog she's taking care of named ... you got it, Lola (the girl scout eating canine).

Susan - (fanning also) I tried to put a couple more up there, but for some reason I guess Blogger felt I'd heated things up enough as it is.

Bailey Stewart said...

Dennie - is it only the books? LOL

Kelley Nyrae said...

I've bought covers for the pictures before. They are getting so hot!
Those are some great titiles too

I just had this conversation with the local librarian. About the old adage, the book and the cover. But it's totally not true, because we buy books for that very reason, unless we've gotten a great recommendation from a friend.

Bailey Stewart said...

Kelley - it's obvious that we all have.

Scott - that's why they work so hard on just the right cover.

Loreth - I don't know - you'll have to ask Rhonda. I figure she has a voodoo doll somewhere with an illustrators face on it. LOL

Kelly (Lynn) Parra said...

Yes, the Blaze covers have been really nice! I've never bought a book just for the title. It's a whole thing with me--cover, title, blurb, first page--if I hadn't heard of the book or author before. Ugh, I'm picky. ;D

Bailey Stewart said...

Kelly - yes you are :p

Rene said...

Covers and titles don't impress me much. I suppose being burned in the past has made me leary.

Siobhan said...

Cover smuvver - it's the blurb that does it for me each time! :-)

Joely Sue Burkhart said...

Blaze is doing some really cool things. I picked up a time travel one continuing the Perfect Timing theme just the other day. Haven't started it yet.....

Meretta said...

I love a great cover, but won't buy the book unless it interests me.

And might I say, it's great to be back!!

Melissa Amateis said...

OOOHHHHH. You just made my day at work a little better.

I love gorgeous covers.

Denise McDonald said...

is it only the books ... well.... no.... LOL!

Carol M said...

I just love the Loving Mercy cover, too! I have a coffee mug with that cover on it! I really enjoy looking at it and I think it's better that you can't see his face. He can look the way you want him to look that way!

Those book titles are great and yes, the Blaze cover are getting hotter! lol

Brandy said...

If I rememeber right, the book was OK, but not as funny as the others in the series.

Bailey Stewart said...

Rene - I don't do it as much now as I used to.

Stacy - I'm still looking for it.

Siobhan - I've been burned by blurbs too.

Joely - I have that one. I haven't started it yet either.

Hello Meretta The falling leaves, drift by my window ...

Melissa - aren't they pertiful ...

Dennie - LOL

Carol - you have a coffee mug with it on there? How did you get that?

Brandy - I knew there were others with titles that were just as great.

Lis said...

Found the link, funny enough it was still in my dropdown on IE.

Holy smoke! That Loving Mercy cover dude is hot! *fanning*

I haven't bought books JUST because I like the title, but if they've got a clever title it makes me read the cover copy. Then if it sounds good, I'll probably buy it.

Oh, and I have a copy of Bimbos of the Death Sun. It's very funny. :)

Sandy J said...

Wow! Double wow! What a hunk! I have to find that one. And the others I would get because the titles are so intriguing.

Anonymous said...

I'd better get busy. Didn't know there was a deadline--or at least, not when it was:
Reyna, Alexandra Lawrence, Juliet, Honor, Shelley Hart, Stephanie "Steve" Ward, Gayla, Ramona Cole, Clio, Sophie Ames, Bianca, Jolie, Piper Gage, Willow, Lora or Lorna; Adriane, Amy, Aimé, Robyn, Jodi, RuthAnne, Mikaela, Taelor, Sierra, Norah, Marjorie, Roxanne

A few lone last names: Shields, Mackenzie, Connery, Connors, Warren, Gallagher, Boddy, Orr.

Anonymous said...

I don't know the last time I bought a book just for the cover. I look at author first, then the blurb and I don't much care what the title is unless it's too raunchy. But a good cover can be a great selling point. I'm glad there aren't so many clinches anymore. And I like the faceless covers too. You can really let your imagination go wild on the face.

I googled the long title and the book is by Sarah Shankman. There is no actual review of the book but someone who reviewed the first? book "He Was Her Man" said the title was the best thing about "I Still Miss..." but that "Digging Up Momma" was really good.

Anonymous said...

Actually, when I put in the correct title with the "still" in it, there are quite a few reviews.

Bailey Stewart said...

Tori - I don't know which cover makes me fan more - Loving or Player. I'll have to keep an eye out for Bimbo.

Sandy - which one?

Thanks Ruby - Brandy said she liked Miss My Man, so I'll go with that more than a reviewer.

Anonymous said...

Oh, thanks for setting me right on the song. I don't know if I've ever consciously heard the Manilow "Lola". I think I just read the first couple of comments and Judy, right after Carli, wrote: "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets."

I've had several deadlines and I'm also totally noise-stressed, meaning that I'm also sleep-deprived. That's why I've not been reading every comment and barely the blog.

How's your writing going?

"The Player" looks like an Army guy. Sounds like an interesting title in that case. And he does look great. So does the Bodwell guy.

Carol M said...

Eve, I got the coffee mug from a contest I won! I have a small coffee mug collection that I have won from authors and book groups.

Amie Stuart said...

Yeah i did--it was one of the worst books I ever read.........

These are great though!!!!!!!

Bailey Stewart said...

Carol - and it has that cover on it? Fantastic!

Cece - I could stare at the cover for The Player all day.
