Tuesday's With Mommy

Mother is much better, thank you. Even the dementia is clearing up a bit. Low sodium, dehydration and a urinary tract infection really messed with her mind. She was much sharper today, although a little unsteady - she's a bit sore. The accident on Sunday night was something that anybody could do - I've almost done it a dozen times, in fact, how many times in the movies have we seen someone try to walk and pull up/down pants at the same time and fall over? The only problem with mother is the arthritis keeps her from helping to pick her up. Anyway, she has an appointment with her doctor on Friday, we are going to discuss getting a social worker (or whoever) over here to assess the situation, tell us what Medicare/Medicaid, her supplemental insurance (which we might have to drop if we use medicaid) will pay for, what they can provide, etc. The situation, at the moment, is a little more under control, although we wouldn't be surprised if she was in a nursing home by the first of the year.

Enough of that - I had a good rest today and am feeling better. So what to do to celebrate? Hmmmm, why don't we just make last Friday's giveaway a free-for-all? Yeah, that's it. Everybody gets their books. I also have the bookflaps from Sasha to get in the mail to those winners.

There's not really a lot more to say. Until my laptop arrives (JOAN!!!!!) I'm still going to be a little scarce around the blogasphere, so be patient. I miss all of you.

Hey! No teasing Brandy!! ;o)
I am truly sorry to hear things were/are going rougher than usual with your Mother, but it sounds like you are stepping in the right direction with the social worker and such.
Sending lots of good thoughts your way as well as hugs and extra hugs!!

Well, I'm glad your mom is feeling better. My mom suffers from terrible arthritis and she falls all the time and can't catch her balance. Dehydration can really be dangerous, glad you caught it. Hope someone can come over and help you decide what needs to be done. There are some really tough decisions coming up. You're in my thoughts.

Oh, I'm so glad about your mom. Things were sounding so difficult for her and you lately. And a urinary tract infection can definitely play havoc with your whole system. Well, any infection can. And I guess she'd be sore today. Falls aren't easy on anyone.

Was the neighbor who helped you on Sunday the same one whose kids make all the noise?

I'm glad that whoever he was he was there for you.

Great to hear that you got a good rest. It was probably the relief to hear your mom wasn't too bad as well as the long hours at emergency. I once had to wait almost 8 hours with my mom before they even came to *look* at what had happened: broken her right hip. It was heart-wrenching to hear her cry out in pain whenever she moved. And they refused to even give her medication before they had diagnosed her. Those were some of the longest hours of *my* life. When they finally came to see her, I'd just gone to feed the meter right in front of the door. Luckily my oldest niece had arrived so that I didn't have to leave here unattended. But surely they could have spared the 30 seconds it took them to diagnose her--at least get x-rays done--some time in the previous 7 odd hours.

But you are a real sweetie. Like I said, you are a care-giver. Thanks for giving a book to each of us. You're so generous and I know the postage isn't that cheap.

Did I tell you that I want to get a laptop too? I can't get any peace and quiet to do work in this place and in the summer, I definitely need to have a cooler place. I'm thinking of a little room in the library. We have those at the Central library and I might be able to use one of the rooms at this one if it's not in use.

Of course, the hugs and prayers are *not* stopping.

And getting someone to assess the whole situation is a big step forward. That's one we missed. We just followed a research doctor's advice--she was doing a double-blind drug test for a possible new Alzheimer's drug that included my mother. (I'm not sure if that's the right term: double-blind).
