Mary and the Cow

Once there was a little girl named Mary who lived on a farm. She was a timid child, not oldest, not youngest - just somewhere in the middle. She loved her daddy and mommy and brothers and sisters, but she was afraid of the cow. Not just the cow, but of the goose too. Everyone was afraid of the goose which made Mary feel better about it, but she was the only one afraid of that cow. One day her father was taking the cow back to the barn when he was called inside to answer the phone. Handing the rope to Mary he told her to wait there until he got back. Mary stood and looked at the cow. It stepped towards her, she stepped back. Again it moved towards her and again she moved back.

Mary's daddy was in the house talking on the phone when he heard Mary screaming. Dropping the phone he ran out of the house. His oldest daughter Alice could hear Mary screaming too, but at the same time she could hear her daddy ... laughing? Going out to the porch, Alice could see her daddy laughing so hard that he was almost bent over. Then she saw Mary run by, the cow right behind her. In between fits of laughter she could hear her daddy yell "Drop the rope." You see, Mary had been standing between the cow and the barn and all the poor thing wanted to do was go to the barn but when she stepped towards it, Mary would back up. And then when the cow moved again, Mary began running - still holding the rope. The poor cow wasn't chasing that little girl, she was being pulled after her. Mary still doesn't like cows - except on her plate. Where they can't chase her.

You really ought to be around when my mother (Mary) and her sister Alice tell this story. Tears of laughter stream down their faces as they both yell "Drop the rope!"

So anyway, some people asked for this story (it's one of Glenice's favorites and she has had the pleasure of hearing it from my mother herself), so here it is.

The goose is another story ...

Oh yes! I love the stories of the funny things children do. Thanks for sharing, Eve! And I love the pic. =D

Oooh, I loved this! My Dad has the story of he and his brother playing in a cave near their house, with a knife. Throwing the knife, in the dark. My Uncle hit my Dad in the head with it, and of course, blood EVERYWHERE. During all of that my Uncle is begging my Dad "Don't tell Mama" (my grandmother). Heheehe! I love to hear my Dad tell it!
I wanna hear the goose story!

ROFL! Love it!

Oh, I love it. It could so easily have been me! :o)

Kelly - that's my mother, that sweet nekkid baby. And to think she didn't even like to answer the phone later if she didn't have her shoes on? Oh, and in case anybody wants to know, the one in the chair is a doll. (you'd be surprised at how many people think it's a baby)

Brandy - I'll tell y'all about the goose another time.

Danica - I was just ready for a laugh.

Shirley - are you afraid of cows?

Sandy J said...

ROTFL! I will be laughing at this ALL day at work! Work? Rats, I am so late! Will be back later!

Love the cowgirl outfit!

Bailey Stewart said...

Sandy - the cowboy outfit was for you. Glad you liked it.

We were on a farm in Uraguay until I was 7, so we were accosted to all the animals, we even had our own pet sheep.

Bailey Stewart said...

Yeah, I'd probably make friends with them too.

Christa said...

that should say accostemed(sp?) See what happens when I only get 5 hours sleep.

good story! LOL!

Bailey Stewart said...

Christa - I wasn't going to say anything, but you did give me a laugh. I don't really need the excuse of not enough caffeine - I just don't pay attention sometimes. LOL

Dennie - that's the point. Needed a laugh.

Bailey Stewart said...

It's really funnier when she tells it. Or tries to tell it. LOL

Toni Anderson said...

LOL--too funny.

Christa is accosting animals? Isn't that illegal?? ;-)

ROFL! The closest I can come to a story like isn't funny. But one of my uncles got kicked in the head by one of my grandpa's horses (they lived on a farm in the hills of Arkansas in the '40s). And even though he was unconscious for two or three days they didn't even take him to the doctor!

I love to hear Mom & Alice tell this story. They get so animated & get the giggles & the unison cry of "Drop the Rope!" is hysterical!

You must tell the goose story soon.

Bailey Stewart said...

Toni - I wasn't going to be the one to say it *gg*

Tori - that's the way they were back then. Had to be tough.

Bebo - *snort*

OH I LOVE THIS STORY!!!

It is so funny to hear it from her too....no matter how many times she tells it :)

Mary is a very sweet lady for those of you who have not had the pleasure of actually meeting her :)

But then so are Eve, Bebo, and Susie :)

Bailey Stewart said...

You've met Eve, Susie and Bebo? LOL

The weird thing is that mom remembered Glenice from her first visit in December to the second one in February. Not exactly an Alzheimer's thing to do.

And she wasn't so sweet the other day when she got mad and threw the TV remote across the room. :(

Wonderful story, Eve!

Life on the farm can be such an education.
Before Allergies, the farm was THE place to be.
Loved to feed the cows - always pushed down on that cool device that made water come out. feed them hay...
But the horses! Well, those are another matter. You see, you'd have to go by the front of the horse stall (like a little hallway) to get around to the side that faces the cows heads. Otherwise, the main ailse is just cow butts. Anyway, they always KNEW when the city chick came by. They waited for me. As soon as I got 1/4 of the way in, out pops their heads and MAN! Do horse have big heads. They'd try to nip at me. They tried to block me. I had to dodge and weave through horse heads to get to the cow heads. And, when I made the mistake of going near them when they're being walked, they casually "bumped" me. Tried to squish me between them (acutally, that was the first time I'd walked with horses and that's how I learned how they felt about city chickies -- horse humor)
Kind of like guys, you know. .. being "hit on" .. They were work horses .. guy horses.. it all fits.
They crowd you, they tease you, they shit ... *ahem*, anyway ...
Yes, I have fond memories of visiting a farm, just not the horses..... Nay ... not them.

Meretta and Susan - we always enjoy this one.

Diane - yes they do. Over and over and over again. LOL

City Chickie - I can almost picture it. Lot's of useful information. Yes folks, this little gal was only on a horse once, and saw cows from a distance. I'm such a city girl also. And yes, Michele - they do remind me of men. LOL

Your poor mama. She was so panicked she didn't think to let go. Classic!

Bailey Stewart said...

Scott - It would have been a typical I Love Lucy episode.

The story is hysterical. My mom lived on a farm and always tells stories about the mean old rooster and trying to get the eggs without getting pecked to death. And her mother always had funny stories to tell. I really enjoy hearing about people's lives.(I thought it was a baby lol)

lol too cute!

Omigod! There are tears running dowm my face I'm laughing so hard. I can just see this little girl running back and forth dragging that poor cow.

70 pages to go on Unleash

Bailey Stewart said...

Jeanne - close to the goose story.

Lis - yes she is. Oh you mean the story?

Suze - not back and forth sweetie - around and around the house. LOL

Home from work and still laughing. And still love the cowgirl outfit!

Bailey Stewart said...

Rene - it's one of our favorites.

Sandy - I'm glad you were able to enjoy it so much. And I do change the outfits for you.

Your Avatar is pretty cool. I like it when you include the cat at your feet.

That was a great story, Eve. You have such a wonderful story about your mother's childhood. My mother told me some amusing ones about her childhood as well, but for the life of me I can't think of a single cute or funny one about my own childhood. I don't know if I was uber-serious or angsty or what. All I can think about are bad or non-approved things that I did. So much for the joys of my childhood.

I'm glad you added that that was a doll. I was sort of wondering. It looks very life-like but just a little too stiff-jointed to be real. Please don't remind me of nekkid pictures.

I love the avatar to go with the story. I've really enjoyed all the ones you've had up.

Poor Christa. I similarly shortened a word the other day and it sounded really weird. At least this was a really word though not the right meaning.

Sandy J. I keep trying to figure out what your "logo" is. Is it a secret or do you know? I guess you can read a lot into it. Very tantalizing.

Christa, I'll put you out of your misery: it's accustomed.

Bailey Stewart said...

Brandy - there will always be a cat there.

Ruby - I have a hard time remembering stories from my childhood too - until my siblings remind me.

LMAO! My sister pulled something a little like that. We were all at the barn, when we heard her screaming inside the house. We all came running, leaving the front screen door slamming behind us. We raced into the kitchen to find my little sister on the floor with tears streaming down her red face, screaming. She had both hands in her hair and was pulling for all she was worth. *ggg* It took us a few minutes to stop laughing long enough to get her to let go. I will never forget it.

Bailey Stewart said...

Oh that's too funny - I can almost picture it. LOL

I love your cow story! I can't wait to hear about the goose!

I'm glad to be back on line. My computer crashed and I missed so much! I always enjoy visiting your site!

What a wonderful story, Eve! I'm so glad you wrote it down so that future generations can enjoy it!

Bailey Stewart said...

Thank you Carol - sorry about the computer. That always stinks.

Melissa - I need to write down her other stories somewhere.
